Contents of archives

Bank of Scotland archives

HBOS Group Archives holds an extensive range of records relating to the Bank of Scotland, dating back to its foundation in 1695.  These include:

  • Minutes (from 1695);
  • Accounting records (including the first subscription ledger from 1695);
  • Staff records;
  • Branch records;
  • Property records (including an extensive collection of architectural plans);
  • Photographs;
  • Scottish banknotes (from 1716).

The archive also contains historical records for a large number of constituent banks, including the British Linen Bank and the Union Bank of Scotland.  For further information see the Bank of Scotland family tree.

Finding aids

Currently the main finding aids for the Bank of Scotland and constituent banks' archives are two surveys compiled by the National Register of Archives Scotland (NRAS) - survey numbers NRAS 945 and NRAS 1110.

The historical records of the Halifax are maintained by HBOS Group Archives. They include:

  • Accounting records (including the first Depositors' Ledger);
  • First completed Halifax mortgage (1853);
  • Staff publications (from 1916);
  • Advertising materials (from 1914);
  • Publications for members ('The Home Owner', 1927-1983).
